Textbook Development for Classes 1 & 2 in Light of NEP 2020

SCERT Conference Hall, 24th April 2025

A one-day intensive workshop on Textbook Development for Classes 1 and 2, aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, was conducted at the SCERT Conference Hall on 24th April 2025.

The event brought together content developers, educators, and experts from across districts to discuss and refine textbook frameworks in line with NEP’s vision of holistic, competency-based, and inclusive education. Additional Director Padmendra Saklani extended a warm welcome and set high expectations for the participants. In addition to the same workshop, Incharge Director Ajay Naudiyal expressed the way development work is proceeding, which will mark new footprints in education.

The workshop was graced by Eminent resource persons from NCERT, New Delhi, including

  • Professor Anup Rajput (NCERT)

  • As Professor Meenakshi Khar (RIE Ajmer)

  • Dr K.N. Bijlwan (Assistant Director, SCERT Uttarakhand)

The event was coordinated by  Ganga Ghugthyal (Lecturer, SCERT).

Workshop Agenda & Key Sessions

 Inaugural Session

  • Welcome address by Assistant Director Dr. K. N. Bijalwan, emphasizing the importance of NEP-aligned textbooks in foundational learning.

  • Professor Anup Rajput's keynote speech highlights the shift from rote learning to competency-based, activity-orientated textbooks.

NEP 2020 & Foundational Literacy & Numeracy (FLN)

  • Importance of play-based and experiential learning for Classes 1 & 2.
  • Integration of local culture, multilingualism, and inclusivity in textbooks.
  • Focus on critical thinking, creativity, and socio-emotional learning (SEL).
Key Discussion Points:

  • Pedagogical Structure: Moving from heavy text to visually rich, interactive content.
  • Assessment Reforms: Incorporating formative assessments rather than exams.
  • Digital Integration: Using QR codes, augmented reality (AR), and digital supplements for enhanced learning.

 Content Review & Hands-on Activity

Activities:

  • Group Work: Participants reviewed existing textbooks and suggested modifications.

  • Case Studies: The discussion included examples of best practices from other states.
  • Drafting Prototypes: Educators worked in teams to design sample textbook pages.
  • Feedback & Action Plan: Participants shared insights and challenges.

The workshop was a significant step toward reimagining early-grade textbooks in line with NEP 2020’s vision. With inputs from NCERT experts and active participation from educators, the new textbooks for Classes 1 & 2 will be more child-friendly, engaging, and competency-driven.
