In a landmark step towards making school education more application-oriented and competency-based, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a major revision in its evaluation pattern for the upcoming Class 10 and 12 Board Examinations in 2026.
This new pattern has been designed in close collaboration with NCERT and SCERTs across the country, with a special emphasis on reducing rote memorization and encouraging conceptual understanding among students.
Highlights of the New Pattern:
-
The new pattern places a greater emphasis on Objective/MCQs to test the clarity of concepts.
-
Short-answer-type questions will encourage analytical thinking.
-
Internal assessments retain their role for holistic evaluation.
Revised Assessment Structure (CBSE 2026):
What It Means for Schools and Students
This structural shift aims to make assessments more meaningful by evaluating students’ problem-solving abilities, critical thinking, and practical application of knowledge. We encourage principals and educators to align teaching-learning practices accordingly and prepare students for this forward-looking change.
