"We got to observe the VSK system first hand, which is an extraordinary step forward in getting real-time data to monitor student attendance and achievement and take steps to help them. I have never seen anything like this, and it looks like an amazing tool to help students and educators. I also learned about 'anandam,' or joy in learning, and the measures being taken to create anandam in the schools. I love this and will definitely bring it back to my school. When we visited the Rajiv Gandhi Navodaya Vidyalaya boarding school, we met with staff and talked about best practices. Although we shared ideas, we agreed that teaching is complicated, especially making sure each student comprehends, and even more, helping students enjoy concepts. We got to meet the students, and they were delightful, speaking about the school, what it means to them, and their aspirations. We ended the day at the tribal school, where we played games together. They went for it! So much joy. I don't know who had more fun, me or them. At the end, they were asked what they learned, and I was impressed by the deep messages in communication, collaboration, and integrity they had taken from 4 Corners and Heads Up 7 Up. Such a beautiful time."

"Today was such an amazing day! We got the fortunate opportunity to visit VKS and SCERT to learn about the amazing things happening for education in India and we got to meet some of the faces behind the projects, data development, and content planning. We also got to visit the residential school and meet some of the students. My favorite part was when we asked the upperclassmen what their favorite part of school was, a girl replied about the opportunities it gave her, the friends and connections she was able to make, and the teachers she adored. It made me remember the benefits of education and the role we are able to play in our students' lives. We also got to go to the tribal school and interact with the students there and play games like 4 Corners and teach them how to do the wave. They were amazing, enthusiastic, kind, and humorous as we all practiced our language skills together and learned how to play as a team. Today was the most special day and I am so thankful to our host teacher, Ramesh, for organizing so many opportunities for us to interact with and spend time with kids. My heart is so full!"

Fulbright Teachers Visit Uttarakhand's Educational Institutions

 
On July 8, 2024, after conducting a teaching session at PM Shree School GGIC Rajpur Road in Dehradun, Fulbright Teachers Danielle Brown and Corinna Christman had the opportunity to delve into the educational landscape of Uttarakhand by visiting the Vidya Samiksha Kendra (VSK), a state-of-the-art data center. The center is pivotal in collecting and analyzing real-time data to enhance the education system of the state.

Visit to Vidya Samiksha Kendra

At the VSK, Danielle and Corinna met with Director of Academic Research and Training, Bandana Garbyal, and Dr. Mukul Sati. Dr. Sati provided an in-depth presentation on the Uttarakhand education system, detailing both existing frameworks and upcoming technological advancements. The VSK plays a crucial role in the continuous improvement of education by gathering data from remote areas, conducting online and offline tests, and maintaining real-time attendance records of teachers, students, and officials in elementary and secondary education.

Madan Mohan Joshi, Project Officer of Samagra Shiksha, also interacted with the Fulbright scholars. He provided an overview of VSK’s operations, the technology employed, and the people managing the system. The visit included a detailed explanation from the VSK manager and team lead, highlighting how real-time data collection impacts education and teacher evaluation.

Interaction with SCERT Uttarakhand

Following their visit to VSK, Danielle and Corinna proceeded to the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) in Uttarakhand. Here, they engaged with faculty officials, including Kamakhya Misra, who presented an overview of SCERT’s functions and the state’s curriculum and teacher policies. The Fulbright teachers shared insights about the US education system, innovative classroom technologies, and various types of schools in the United States.

A lively question-and-answer session allowed faculty and scholars to exchange ideas and discuss best practices. Joint Directors Kanchan Devradi and Asha Rani Painuilly highlighted several state initiatives such as Anandam, Pratibha Divas, Pravesh Mahotsav, Kaushalam, and technological events like Technomela and the Inspire Award Exhibition. These initiatives aim to integrate innovation and technology into teaching plans and inquiry projects.

    Engagement at Rajiv Gandhi Navodaya Vidyalaya

The Fulbright teachers then visited Rajiv Gandhi Navodaya Vidyalaya, a residential school, where they interacted with Vice Principal Girish Thapliyal and the science and mathematics faculties. They also engaged with senior students, discussing their daily routines and study management. A friendly game of volleyball with the students allowed for a deeper connection and understanding of the physical and social environment of the school.

Visit to the State Virtual Studio

Danielle and Corinna's next stop was the state virtual studio, which conducts live lessons and interacts with over 500 schools in real-time. They met resource persons, technicians, and faculty coordinators Pushpa Aswal and Sudhir Nautiyal, who oversee content development and video recordings for the PM eVidya channels. These channels broadcast class-appropriate and subject-specific lessons across the state, making education accessible to students in remote areas.

The scholars appreciated the innovative approaches used to provide educational content and platforms to students lacking resources and teachers. This initiative ensures continuity in learning despite geographical challenges.

Evening Activities and Cultural Exchange

In the evening, Danielle and Corinna visited a tribal Eklavya residential school, where they conducted energizer activities and games with the students. These activities aimed to develop leadership skills, teamwork, and engagement. The session was attended by Director Bandana Garbyal and Dr. Mohan Bisht from SIEMAT Uttarakhand, who praised the interactive and innovative methods used by the scholars.

The day concluded with a visit to Ramesh Badoni’s house for a traditional dinner. This provided an opportunity to experience local Garhwali food, culture, and community living. The Fulbright scholars and their hosts exchanged souvenirs and shared their experiences, marking the end of a day filled with learning, interaction, and cultural exchange.

This visit by the Fulbright teachers not only showcased the educational advancements in Uttarakhand but also fostered a deeper understanding and collaboration between educators from India and the United States.

Fulbright TGC Scholars Explore Cultural and Natural Wonders in Uttarakhand

The Fulbright TGC program continues to offer enriching experiences for U.S. Fulbright Scholar teachers Danielle Brown and Corinna Christman, who are currently participating in a teaching exchange at PM SHREE Government Girls Inter College (GGIC) Rajpur Road in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. 

On July 7th, with coordination by host alumni Ramesh Badoni, the scholars immersed themselves in the cultural and natural beauty of the region with visits to Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Rajaji National Park in the Chila Range. Joint Director Kanchan Devadi facilitated the visit to Parmarth Niketan, ensuring that Danielle and Corinna had access to this significant spiritual and cultural site

Exploring Haridwar and Rishikesh

Danielle and Corinna started their journey in Haridwar, a city renowned for its spiritual significance. They visited the Mansa Devi Temple, perched atop the Bilwa Parvat on the Shivalik Hills. The scholars enjoyed a thrilling ride on the cable car ropeway, which offered panoramic views of the city and the Ganges River. At the temple, they witnessed the devotion of countless pilgrims and learned about the rich history and legends associated with Mansa Devi, a revered Hindu goddess.

Next, the scholars traveled to Rishikesh, the yoga capital of the world. At Parmarth Niketan, one of the largest ashrams in the area, they observed yoga sessions and participated in discussions about the spiritual practices and beliefs that are central to Indian culture. They were particularly interested in  Ganga Aarti too, a nightly ritual on the banks of the Ganges, where they experienced the deep sense of spirituality and community among the participants.

Adventures in Rajaji National Park

Their exploration continued with a visit to Rajaji National Park in the Chila Range. The park, known for its rich biodiversity, offered the scholars a chance to experience India's wildlife up close. The natural beauty and tranquility of the park provided a stark contrast to the bustling city life and highlighted the diverse environments within India.

Cultural Exchange and Local Experiences

Throughout their travels, Danielle and Corinna embraced local transportation methods, including auto rickshaws, which added an element of adventure to their journey. They interacted with local residents, learning more about daily life and customs. The scholars also shared their own cultural beliefs and practices with the people they met, fostering a mutual exchange of ideas and traditions.

Ramesh Badoni, who coordinated the trip, played a crucial role in ensuring that the Fulbright scholars experienced the best of what Uttarakhand has to offer. His insights into local traditions and his guidance throughout the journey enriched their experience, providing deeper context and understanding of the places they visited.

The Fulbright scholars expressed their admiration for the vibrant culture, spirituality, and natural beauty of Uttarakhand. They noted how these experiences have deepened their understanding of India's cultural fabric and enriched their overall Fulbright journey. The visits to Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Rajaji National Park were not only educational but also provided personal growth and a greater appreciation for the global community.
